Where do I begin? Should it be two nights before our departure to our vacation? Sure, why not. 11:30pm, Daniel wakes up, sick all over his bed. Up with him every 1/2 hour after that, completely sick. "Mommy, I can't get a good nap." I felt so bad for him. He was so exhausted and frustrated. However Saturday, he moved slowly, but as the day progressed he started to perk up. He was determined to go to the beach. Sunday morning comes, we are super excited to get on the road to Seacliff, planning on leaving at 11am. Not quite. 10:00am, Adam throws up all over me and the bathroom. Twice. Got cleaned up and waited a few hours. He didn't get sick anymore so we finished packing up and headed out. The whole way, Jay is restless (usually a relaxed mellow driver) and mentions he's not feeling too good. Pull into our campsite. Jay begins setting up, and within a half hour....sick. The rest of the night, from the bed to the bathroom.

Monday was a recovery day for him,

but he was a trooper and we all enjoyed a great afternoon at the beach.

The boys had a blast with the sand toys, playing football, and playing in the waves. But...Tuesday, 7:30am...boom,
it hits me. Out for the rest of the day. Wednesday, back at the beach, but a
very very slow recovery day for me. On Thursday, everyone's feeling good, so we headed out to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. We stopped on the way to see Grandpa and Grandma Bee which led to an interesting conversation with Daniel.

Once we arrived at the Boardwalk, Daniel enjoyed a few rides (airplanes, race cars, and the skyride). I was terrified that he was going to fall through what I felt like was a huge gap in the bars of the skyride, so I kept my hand across his gut the entire time and was a sweaty mess. I felt like I was on a roller coaster I was so nervous.

Clearly I am not a ride person. Jay rode the Big Dipper and had a blast. I hope the kids follow in his footsteps and like the thrill sensation. We nibbled on some lunch at the Boardwalk, bought some souvenirs, and headed home for naps. Poor Adam wakes up from his nap scorching hot. Took his temp, 102.8. Great. Gave him some Tylenol. He nibbled on some jello but would not eat any real food. I didn't blame him since all of us basically nibbled the whole vacation as food didn't not really appeal to any of us. He had two bouts of diarrhea before going down to sleep that night. He woke up at 2am crying but was able to get himself comfortable again, and went back to sleep. At 4am, he woke up screaming and was burning up, so I brought him into our bed where he unhappily tossed and turned. 6am, he woke up screaming...this time crying inconsolably. This is NOT like Adam at all. I put on my clothes, grabbed a cold sippy cup of water and off we went in search of an emergency room. It is very scary and sad to have your child in the hospital, if I must say. They started off with his vitals, blood work, put a bag on him to catch urine, and

tested him for strep. His white blood count and CRP count were both elevated....meaning infection. He had to have a chest xray which was where I finally lost it. I broke down with quite a few tears. My poor little guy was strapped into this contraption, his legs down, plastic all around his torso, and I had to hold his hands over his head. It was really hard for me to tell him everythings ok, as I could barely see him through my tears. Chest xray results came back normal. Then he had to go for a ultrasound on his belly. Everything was fine there as well...just acute gastroenteritis which is a fancy word for intestinal inflammation. Finally the ER doctor called for a pediatrician to come visit Adam. Thankfully, she was great and sweet, unlike the ER doc who was grouchy and had no personality! The ped doc checked Adam thoroughly, and finally diagnosed him with tonsillitis. Poor guy...he's had tonsillitis before and was miserable for 5 days. He received two shots of antibiotics in his legs as a parting gift and we were on our way...1:30pm. Yes, talk about a long day at the ER with a 15 month old. By the time we got back to our campsite, he went down for a nice long 3-hour nap. Still didn't feel well, but was manageable. After dinner, we all hopped in the car and took off to Capitola to get Adam's prescription filled and for some goodies for the rangers and staff that let us stay the week for free at this gorgeous place! We came back and went to sleep hoping Adam would be much better in the morning and we could stay until Sunday. Unfortunately, he felt like like the burning sun this morning and so we packed up. It's good to be home now and I am sure Adam is appreciating sleeping in his own crib right now. He still has a temp of 102 and is feeling very ill. All in all, it was a great trip, even through all of our sickness. We cannot wait to go back again next summer and do all of the things we had planned for this trip but were unable to accomplish!
